Save! Save! Save!

[in this game money talks & it's loud]

There isn't enough sugar in Candyland to sugar coat the fact that, in order to lose you property virginity, you need the cold hard cash. The gross amount required for a downpayment, closing costs and countless other expenses that come with owning a home may seem farfetched. I won't lie and say it isn't somewhat daunting. Up until I did save the amount required, I had only ever seen that much money flashing under someones face during a game show. I never imagined ever seeing that amount in my bank account. I also won't lie and say it's impossible.
If I did it, anyone can do it! Seriously!

A little about me; in my youth, every time I earned or was given $20, I would spend $40. As ashamed of that as I am now, I know I'm not alone. Saving in order to obtain my house was challenging. I moved in with my parents right out of college. I know, I know, social suicide. If I'm being completely truthful, it wasn't so bad. I was able to get in irreplaceable quality time with my folks. Years that I will forever cherish [sidenote: don't ever forget that as you grow up, your parents are growing old].

Enough with the heartfelt anecdote;  let's just say aside from my necessary expenses, my bank account was particularly tranquil. It was certainly frustrating at times, yes, now that I am finally in my own little corner of the world it was TOTALLY worth it. So, I couldn't go get Starbucks in  moments notice, or stock up on candles at Bath and Body Works still, I managed to survive. It takes time and determination but if you're willing to put in a little effort, your bank account will grow. My rule was always if I'm not thinking about it a week later, then I really didn't need/want it that much. If you will not die without it, don't buy it. Extra tip, every so often treat yourself! You know what I mean? Don't go off and blow your entire savings on a trip to Vegas but, see a show, attend a game, get a new purse or a pair of shoes. "Don't stop living in order to get a place to live."

  1. Very insightful post! I agree that as young adults we tend to spend frivolously and not save like we should be. I picked up saving habits early and its paid off.
